News and Notices from the Writing Trenches #49…
#268: Free ebook! Over the U.S. Memorial Day weekend (May 24-28, 2013), I am offering my new release Teeter-Totter between Lust and Murder FOR FREE on Amazon. Don’t miss this chance for some great summer reading. It’s also a way to introduce yourself to my writing. You only need a Kindle or the free Kindle app for your electronic device. Download now before you forget. The book will return to its released price of $4.99 come May 29. Don’t miss out!
#269: Guest posts. The second part of my “Targeting Specific Audiences” appeared in Writers on the Move on 5/17. The third part, discussing metrics, will appear on 5/30. “Between Writer and Reader” appeared on Karen Cioffi Writing and Marketing last week (5/15). Although all these posts are more for writers, readers might find them entertaining if only to understand those strange people, the writers.
#270: Sites promoting free ebooks. There are several of them. I’ve listed a couple on my webpage “Join the Conversation.” If you are a reader, you can download some great reading FREE (see #268). If you are a writer, you can broadcast your promo to thousands of readers. I personally hate promos because they devalue my work. But I can do them because my writing business is low budget and I’m more interested in acquiring new readers than becoming rich (of course, I wouldn’t mind that too!).
Here’s the problem (there’s always a caveat): In setting up the promo for Teeter-Totter between Lust and Murder, I found several of these sites unusable. The problems ranged from no obvious way for a writer to submit his books to the slavish use of Google Docs for their forms, which is usually so busy it will hang your browser. One even asked for the URL to my computer corresponding to a cover JPEG! Many sites will fill your screen with pop-down ads as well (Google again—the ads seem directed at me!) I’m not going to publish a list of offenders here, but these site owners (they’ll know who they are if they read this), while doing a service to their readers, aren’t helping indie writers at all.
#271: Holiday brevity. This “News and Notices…” is purposely short. Please enjoy times with your family and friends if you’re celebrating the U.S. Memorial Day holiday, and don’t forget why we have it—our service men and women who have given their lives should be recognized for their sacrifice, and those who have returned need your support.
